Home automation is having simple functions in a home automatic.  Turning the lights on in the entry way when you open the door. This keeps you from fumbling for the light with your hands full.  How about having the outside lights turn on at dusk if you are not home yet.  These are only a few examples of some simple lighting scenes.  A lot of people have programmable thermostats.  These would work great if we all lived on a schedule everyday.  The automation system can set back the heat when leave for work early and turn the heat on when you come home late.  This saves on your heating/cooling bill, just by following your life and not a schedule.
